Cohabitation (Percy, Zeus/Ganymede, PG)
Percy, Zeus/Ganymede . 1,779 words . PG . college!verse . Percy shouldn't've worried about his new roommate.

"Hiya, Percy."

He'd been so nervous and flustered about this, about going to college and living in a dorm and having to share his space with someone else, someone who didn't understand what he was and what he'd done and why he didn't take meds for his ADHD. He'd mentally prepared himself, made up excuses for all of his demigod-related oddities, and even stressed out over what he would be wearing when moving in, to make the best first impression. (His mother and Nico had even helped with that, if you defined 'help' as 'teasing him and calling him paranoid'. And 'fagalicious', in Nico's case.)

All of his problems would have been solved if someone had bothered to inform him that his new roommate was Ganymede.

It was clearly his room. The bedspread was white, with a purple fleece blanket neatly folded over it, and everything else on his half of the room was decorated in shades of blue with the occasional cloud motif or lightning bolt. There was a shelf right above the bed, and a row of Harry Potter hardcovers sat in gleaming pristine condition.

"What the hell," Percy sighed. "Are you seriously going to the same college as me?"

"Well, yes." The young man was sitting at his desk, feet tucked up under him, working at a little white macbook with his hair in a tight fishtail. "We both got our housing forms in late, and -"

"Don't even try to tell me you didn't engineer this." Percy pushed his suitcase onto his side of the room and began the slow process of unpacking.

"...All right." He threw a twisted grin over his shoulder. "I might've pulled a few strings. But before you go jumping to the wrong conclusions - I wanted to be here, and I wanted to room with you. This isn't the first time I've gone to college and it certainly won't be the last."

Percy slammed a drawer shut. "You're not just babysitting me?"

He expected Ganymede to admit it, to say yes, to hedge the words somehow and probably, ultimately end up convincing him it was a good idea - but Percy still wouldn't like it, and he didn't need a fourth parent.

But to his surprise, his eyes widened, and it was with complete honesty that the cupbearer of the gods said "No, I'm not. I honestly like spending time with you and thought it would be a relief to both of us. But if you want me to room somewhere else, I'll leave."

With that, Percy deflated a little. Yeah, sure it was a surprise and he would have liked to know a little sooner - but the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. And at least you won't have to worry about your roommate finding out, he thought, which to be honest had been a near-crushing source of anxiety.

He smiled. "No, don't. You're right - it is a relief. Just..." he glanced around at everything in the room, and it was a cruel but true thought: everything Ganymede owned screamed gay, gay, gay. "...I'm sorry if we don't hang out much otherwise," he finished lamely, totally unable to put his feelings into words without sounding like a total asshole.

Ganymede seemed to understand what he was getting at, and a slow smile curled on his lips. "I really didn't expect you to."

+

He did make friends. A lot of them. At least, there were people he went to the football games with, talked to in class, and sat at the same table during lunch. But it didn't feel like real friendship, not like Grover and Annabeth and Nico and Rachel. Even when he was away, he spent more time on the phone with Nico, more weekends with Rachel in the city, more texts exchanged with his best satyr. But that was okay.

College was, in general, 'okay'. He was learning a lot that's for sure, and for once the classes were interesting and he didn't feel like he was constantly fighting a losing battle against peer pressure. So that was great. But he was going to be glad when it was over, he realized. Glad to have more time to train, to do some real restoration work, to travel and fight monsters and spend more time with the people he really cared about. He couldn't wait.

"Percy," Nico said, piously, upon entering his room and fixing his eyes on Ganymede's shiny new xbox 360, "I want curl up in your room and never leave."

And he played Halo with his friends, too, but everything with Nico was more fun.

+

He came back into his room and found someone sitting on Ganymede's bed, leaning back against the wall, and calmly thumbing through his roommate's folder of sketches.

"Um, hey," he said, his voice wary. "I don't know who you are but could you... not touch that?"

He was maybe about Percy's age or a little older, early twenties perhaps, with black hair that needed a trim and stormy gray eyes. He pushed his bangs out of his face, peering over the top of the folder with an almost condescending look, but then - when he caught sight of Percy - he did the strangest thing.

His eyes lit up, and he snickered.

"What's so funny?"

"Oh - nothing. Sorry about that." He didn't sound sorry, but he did put the folder down, and pulled a knee up to wrap broad arms around it. He was on the muscular side, solid, and managed to be a forceful presence even when sitting casually on someone else's bed.

Percy really didn't like him.

"Save your apologies. Did you come in here to spy on my roommate, or do you have a real reason?"

"I know Ganymede, if that's what you're talking about." Once again, that air of importance and self-satisfaction. Percy had known too much conceited gods and playground bullies; that sort of behavior got his hackles up faster than anything.

"Yeah, well there's a difference between knowing and having good intentions, if you know what I mean."

The strange boy looked over his shoulder, just for a second, and cracked a grin. "I wouldn't classify my intentions as good, no."

Just as Percy was about to get really furious, he heard Ganymede's voice from behind him, in the doorway. "Stop teasing him. It isn't nice."

Percy whipped around, then sighed as he saw that his roommate's face was simply amused - charmed, even, with a light in his eyes that Percy rarely saw. "You do know him, then?"

"Of course." Ganymede dropped his bag at the foot of his bed, then leaned over as he opened up his laptop. The stranger picked up the sketch folder again, started where he had left off. "...Intimately, in fact."

He slammed it down on his lap, looking incredulous. "Now who's teasing?"

"I'm not the one who didn't introduce myself," Ganymede pointed out matter-of-factly. Then he turned, raised an eyebrow at Percy who was still completely clueless and really, really confused. "You really haven't figured it out, have you?"

"Who are you?" he finally stammered.

The stranger grinned, smarmy and condescending. "Percy, I'm insulted. It's Zeus."

Oh.

Oh.

"Uh," Percy said, floundering. "Um. Yeah. You look, um, different."

Zeus snorted. "I'm not that much of a cradle robber."

"Ye~s you are," Ganymede cut in.

"Fine. I am. But no one needs to know that, right?" He stood up, spread his arms so Percy could finally, clearly see the 'I'm Kind of a Big Deal' t-shirt he had on. He spun in a circle. "Do I blend in or what?"

Percy had no idea how to respond to this.

Ganymede reached out blindly and shoved. "Sit down, no one wants to see that."

He did, reluctantly, but he pouted and Percy was pretty sure he'd crossed into some sort of Twilight-Zone alternate universe, where the King of Gods spent his free time lolligagging in awful t-shirts and pouting because he was shoved by the girliest boy in existence.

"Come on, baby, you said we'd go out tonight," he whined (yes, whined) and picked a loose thread on the comforter.

"Yes," Ganymede replied, with what seemed to be an infinite supply of patience. "We will. Let me check my email."

He frowned and made a little stormcloud in his hand.

"...Stop that. it'll only take a minute. Need I remind you how long it's been since you last called me, let alone came to visit? You can wait a little longer."

Zeus turned to Percy then, as if Percy could possibly sympathize - or would.

He shook his head. "Oh, no. There is no way I'm getting involved in this one. None. Nada. This is the Percy bubble. You don't exist in the Percy bubble." He turned around, tried to keep himself from blushing red as he still couldn't believe he was talking this way to, in all honesty, his uncle. "I'm going to play Soul Calibur and pretend I can't hear you."

Ganymede laughed. "That's probably for the best," he said. "I'll see you on Monday, all right?"

He did look up at that, though. "You'll be gone all weekend?" Not that Ganymede was around much on the weekends, unlike Percy, he had a busy social life. But he'd gotten used to the pattern of their life, of having someone around to talk to and gossip with, someone to say goodnight to.

He tilted his head towards Zeus, though, and lifted a critical eyebrow as if to say, Well what did you think?

Percy's ears went red, and he turned back to the console. "Um. I'll see you on Monday."

"Have a nice weekend, Percy. Don't do anything I wouldn't do!"

+

In half a hour, he texted Nico.

Come over for the weekend? G is out.

The reply came almost instantly.

Be there in five. Look to the shadows.

this is absolutely excellent. You must write more in this verse, because I adore it. I am going to quote now.

But it didn't feel like real friendship, not like Grover and Annabeth and Nico and Rachel. Even when he was away, he spent more time on the phone with Nico, more weekends with Rachel in the city, more texts exchanged with his best satyr. But that was okay.
This I like for two reasons. One, you list his friends, and then how he keeps in touch with them. Secondly, you don't say how he keeps in touch with Annabeth. That amuses me. And I love the idea of Percy spending hours on the phone with Nico, maybe just to hear his voice.

"Percy," Nico said, piously, upon entering his room and fixing his eyes on Ganymede's shiny new xbox 360, "I want curl up in your room and never leave."
Of course, Nico, baby. We know you want to stay with Percy.

And he played Halo with his friends, too, but everything with Nico was more fun.
And Percy wouldn't really mind.

He did, reluctantly, but he pouted and Percy was pretty sure he'd crossed into some sort of Twilight-Zone alternate universe, where the King of Gods spent his free time lolligagging in awful t-shirts and pouting because he was shoved by the girliest boy in existence.
I like this just because I think it sums up Zeus and Ganymede rather nicely in your verse.

"Oh, no. There is no way I'm getting involved in this one. None. Nada. This is the Percy bubble. You don't exist in the Percy bubble."
*snickers* I love this. I love the Percy bubble. this is just hilarious to me, and I love it. Percy bubble ftw. (I bet Nico exists in the Percy bubble *lol*)

Poor, innocent, naive Percy. You are adorable in your cluelessness.

In half a hour, he texted Nico.

I love that he only lasted half a hour, and that he didn't ask for just a visit, but the entire weekend. I also love how Nico doesn't even think about it, but agrees. I love the last line about watching the shadows, but I don't know why.

So... in case you haven't guessed, I like this. :)

This fic is just so squishy and huggable. I love your Ganymede, he's just so fun. And college blend Zeus is awesome. I love how you characterize everyone. The dynamic is just so fun and light, but still meaningful.

Also, I love love love the last bit with the Nico textage. It's so adorbs. also, Nico's line bout never leaving.

DEAR YOU, YOU ROCK. LOVE MAX.

ahaha Zeus in an 'I'm Kind of a Big Deal' t-shirt is like the best mental image ever, if only because I'm picturing like, old-classical-like!Zeus. ♥ and poor Percy, still so awkward and adorable.

WELL ALSO, GANYMEDE WAS GETTING PRETTY FED UP WITH ZEUS'S NEEDINESS BY THAT TIME, THANKS TO THE VOW THING. BUT THE ALTERNATIVE, ZEUS GOING OUT AND FUCKING LOTS OF OTHER GUYS, WAS EQUALLY DISPLEASING.

it was a bad half a century. there were fights. for once, hera and ganymede agreed on something and they pretty much were like OH GOD, THE APOCALYPSE IS NIGH.

so really he's just being an equal dick in turn.

LOL WHAT KIND OF MEME? I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW THAT WOULD WORK.

I can't believe I haven't read this one yet. I thought I'd read all your Zeus/Ganymede fics and then I stumble upon this~ :D

I love the idea of Percy rooming with Ganymede and seeing Zeus in college guy form and not knowing it's him. XD The shirt did me in.

As did the Percy Bubble. I laughed so hard!

HEARTS IN MY EYES.

Zeus snorted. "I'm not that much of a cradle robber."

"Yes you are," Ganymede cut in.

"Fine. I am."

Yes, he is. I'm glad he realizes that. I love your Zeus/Ganymede, by the way, which is, perhaps, the pairing I thought I was LEAST likely ever to enjoy. But yours are adorable.

"Yes," Ganymede replied, with what seemed to be an infinite supply of patience. "We will. Let me check my email."

He frowned and made a little stormcloud in his hand.

"...Stop that. it'll only take a minute."

I love, love casual uses of magic in canon/fanon worlds where it exists. What's the point of Zeus if he can't make a little thunderstorm in his hand as a form of whining?

"Have a nice weekend, Percy. Don't do anything I wouldn't do!"

In half a hour, he texted Nico.

OIC what you're implying there. Percy/Nico don't do anything GANYMEDE wouldn't do...

he still couldn't believe he was talking this way to, in all honesty, his uncle.
So characteristic for Percy to be defensive of his roomate and willing to take on Zeus himself, if necessary to protect his territory!

And Percy taking half an hour to work up his courage to invite Nico over is also very much in character. A whole weekend to themselves...I'll bet they'll always remember it fondly.
